In 1993 Bill and Mary Stipe bought 10 acres in central Whidbey Island near Greenbank. They cleared about half the acreage and started planting species rhododendrons Bill collected in China. He also planted many selected rhododendron hybrids he collected while he was the manager at Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens.
The gardens have evolved over the years and now includes a display gardens of hybrids developed in the Northwest, a species display garden, and hybrids developed by Bill. A new feature is a miniature conifer and dwarf rhododendron display garden, Bill calls “Tiny Treasures”.
The Gardens have a large selection of rhododendron and conifers for sale, from budget priced potted plants to mature specimen up to 10 feet. We sell both retail and wholesale (wholesale discount available to resellers). Many of our sales are to landscapers and encourage their clients to come and pick out the plants they prefer.
All plants in the garden have been selected to flourish in Northwest weather and soil. Continual testing weeds out all but the “Proven Performers”.
The gardens are open 7 days a week from 8:00 AM to 5 PM. There are no employees other than Bill and Mary, so there may be some times sales are not possible, but the display gardens are open. It may be prudent to call first if you are interested in buying.
The Gardens have many interesting plants and trees but the prime viewing season is from early March through October. There is no entry fee.
